Carrilon UK - The Right Rod Welcome To Carrilon UK - Fly Fishing Shop

Right Rod

Choosing a fly rod can be a confusing business, Some suggest you make your choice according to species, others by location, others by physical stature... All are in thier way relevant, We offer the two easiest to choose a fly rod.

Step 1. Have a look at the table... it wont choose the rod for you, but it will give you a good idea of which rods are suited to each type of game fishing.

There needs to be some means of matching a rod to a line. This method used is the AFTM system, The AFTM number
(e,g #6/7) is an indiction of the stiffness or power of the rod. Basically, the bigger the AFTM No. the more powerful the rod is and requires a heavier line to load and cast correctly.

Fly lines are notionally rated with the same system, (eg WF7) which is a weight forward AFTM 7 (#7) rated line.

The system is based upon the fact that the first 30 or so of a, say #7 line weights enough to load the spring of a #7 rod, But... this is not rocket science, common sense dictates that not every csat of a #7 rod will be exectly 30 long and so in practice a #7 rod is quite capable of casting a #6, #7 or #8 line, assuming the angler understands the basic princple.

Do not spend sleepless nights worrying about which line to put with which rod, if the rod says #6/7, it should be capable of dealing with any #6 or #7 line.
