Traditional Reel
Traditional Fly Reels have a small centre spindles with enough spool capacity
to take anywhere from 50 - 200 yards of backing (dependant upon type) to which
the fly line is then attached and wound on to fill out the spool. The backing
serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides a saftey buffer in the event of a powerful
fish making a strong run and talking all your fly line. Secondly, the larger outer
diameter reduces the tendency for some fly line to acquire "memory coils"

A traditonal reel correctly loaded with backing is where LA reels start... | Large Arbour
Large Arbour Reels have a large centre spidle to start with, giving a quick line
retriecal and less memory coils - in fact a bit like having a traditonal reel
with backing.. so wheres the advanage?
Well... when was the last time you got down to let alone beyond your backing?
Not many people do but, quite a lot of large arbors reels do also allow for some
backing and so they end up exactly what they say on the box.. Large !!
